The Young Israel Sisterhood functions run the gamut from education to chesed to fundraising and to social events. Our fundraising efforts go directly to the YIO's Youth department, women’s lecture series, shiva meals and other chesed.

TORAH & EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES

By Women for Women Lecture Series:
The brightest and most knowledgeable women speak on scholarly topics relevant to the orthodox woman of the 21st Century.  Our lecturers have included such erudite and inspiring women as Myrna Weinberger, Esther Wein, Debbie Greenblatt, Leah Kohen, Rookie Billet, Chavi Willig, Elana Stein Hain, Tehila Jager, Smadar Rosensweig, Yaffa Jungreis and our very own Shulamit Gottesman Rubin, Yael Klein Leibowitz and Aviva Schiffmiller.   Chaired by Sondra Gottessman.

Tehillim:
Weekly meeting at the home of one of our members includes a recitation of tehillim followed by a shiur given by Rabbi Muskat.  

Shemiras Halashon:
Several times a year, videos from the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation are shown. Excerpts from A Lesson A Day are included in our Chesed page.
Chaired by Lori Schrier.

Parsha:
Shabbat afternoons, a shiur for women is given by one of the members of our community. The growing crop of speakers includes men and women of all ages.
Chaired by Sondra Gottessman.        Summer Months: Eleanor Frankel and Carol Casden.

Nach Yomi:
Members have taken on the 2-year commitment to study a perek of nach daily. We share our thoughts via email and meet quarterly.
Chairs are Yael Muskat and Bea Mauskaupf.

 

CHESSED ACTIVITIES

In times of joy as well as in times of sorrow, Young Israel of Oceanside is one extended family.

Chesed Meals
Delivered to those who have had surgery, given birth and others in need.
To contribute a meal, contact Suzanne Diskind or Sara Kamintzsky to receive an email when a need arises.

Sisterhood has a number of ongoing programs, which help maintain our Torah and chesed activities.
 
Supermarket Coupons: At no additional cost to consumers, cards for shopping at Stop n Shop, Waldbaums and Brachs will bring a 5% donation to sisterhood. Cards can be purchased in $50 denominations on a monthly basis.

Sisterhood Boutiques: Sisterhood brings the shopping to you with annual pre-rosh hashana hat sales, pre-chanukah boutiques and pre-pesach boutiques.

Supperette: Annual ladies dinner in the shul to honor one of our members who has worked hard on behalf of sisterhood.
 
 

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

Sisterhood’s monthly meetings to exchange ideas, raise funds and just have some good fun! Activities include: rosh chodesh programs, spa night, self-help lectures, boutiques and social events.

Book Club (for men and women): Sisterhood book club meets every 6 to 8 weeks to discuss books of either general or specifically Jewish interest. Meetings are held in members’ homes and members rotate as moderators.
